My work is about finding clarity in the subconscious world of dreams that carries over into and transforms ones waking life. The dream state, full of metamorphosis and dual meaning, teems with the same complexities and logical abstractions as the constructed rites of shamans and scenarios of directors.
I create solid, material objects inspired by the transformative occurrences of the dream state. The pieces have multiple layers that are revealed through personal interaction as well as by seeing them used in performance. In the performance work, there is a dialogue between the actor and the object; each informing the other to generate a high level of expressive potential. Together the two parts speak to the attempts of people to mitigate their surroundings and to a journey into the subconscious. Similarly, my more functional furniture pieces contain layers of information discovered through use. These pieces frequently contain hidden drawers or have multiple purposes and address a type of understanding that comes from doing. I employ symbolism in physical form and human action to create simultaneous, multiple meanings and use ambiguity, ritual imagery, and ritualized movement as a platform for exploration of the more mysterious realms of the human psyche.
